sunshine and biscuits

on my way home last night, i noticed the sky had a pinkish hue to it, creating a peaceful glow over the frozen snow. when i saw that, i knew today would be a beautiful day... and when i woke up this morning, THERE WAS SUN COMING THROUGH THE WINDOWS! i smiled and stretched, then jumped out of bed to get in the shower so that i could start my day and bask in the sunshine...

then late in the afternoon, after an extra long walk to find one of the maybe two grocery stores open on a sunday in odense, our house came alive with everyone baking something from their home country for a late afternoon brunch. i chose to make biscuits, being that is the one thing i really miss when i'm in europe. it was hard to explain what is a "biscuit," american-style, to my european and asian friends. sooo i made them, FROM SCRATCH for the first time... and it was a biscuit success story, to be sure.

we ate for two and a half hours, devouring american biscuits with cheddar cheese, spanish tortilla, krapfen (like a jelly donut) from austria, karjalanpiirakka (rye bread pastry with a rice filling and egg-butter-cottage cheese topping) from finland, a garlic rye bread with cheese from latvia, cookies, and finally finishing with hot chocolate, italian/spanish style. i feel like i'm going to burst! everything was SOOO delicious... i'm glad my housemates love to cook!  :)
